This Christmas Will Be Different

Christmas Eve

This Christmas is going to be different.  Collectively, the members of my immediate family decided to change the way we celebrate Christmas this year.  We’ve created this change in order to make the focus of Christmas more about the celebration of our lives together and each other, and less about “stuff”.  This new tradition was rather “forced” upon us because of the poor economy, but the old saying “if life gives you lemons, make lemonade?”  Well, that’s what we’re going to do!

This Christmas, we’ll spend more time with festivities, such as decorating and baking together.  We’ll continue our usual Christmas Eve tradition of sitting in front of the fireplace, sipping on hot, spiced apple cider, while reading together the wonderful book, The Polar Express.

But, the biggest change we’ll make is this: each person will receive a single gift, collectively chosen by all other members of our immediate family.  There will be a spending limit for each gift.  On Christmas morning, we’ll each unwrap our one, special gift.  And the remainder of the day will be spent enjoying each other and all the wonderful culinary goodies we’ve prepared together.

I’m excited about this new tradition we’ve created!  All this, because life delivered more lemons this year than usual.  Only we’ll make hot, spiced apple cider, instead of lemonade.
