Hypnotic glances,
sly,
slide
almost imperceptibly
around the room,
glide
nearly invisible,
then stop,
take their target
hostage,
undetected for a
moment,
savage,
then drink up their prey,
those eyes.
Wise.
Satiated hunger,
quenching their thirst,
but only for a moment,
pausing only to note:
They need more.
Shift,
move on to another,
never leaving
pain.
Take what is needed,
then leave it alone,
almost without a mark,
then again,
whisper to the right,
sultry,
blink softly,
lap up the goodness,
then leave the kiss,
such tenderness.
Roam around the room,
invisible,
sated again,
crawl back behind
lidded eyes.

Wow, Janet! I can almost taste the mystery of your words.
Glad you enjoyed!
‘take their target hostage’ – wonderful, resonant poem
Thank you for reading, and for the compliment!
Beautiful, mysterious poem and photo. I see the owl through your words as doing what it needs to do to survive as part of his nature but without inflicting unnecessary suffering.
Yes!

Thank you, Jen. I am sloooooowly getting back to health, hence my even slower responses to your cherished honors given me. I will be addressing them! I must admit, that since I’ve been recouperating, and not posting as much as before, I feel a bit shy about accepting these special recognitions. I hope that’s still okay. Thanks so much for your brave, bold and educational blog, which I’m sure has/is helping so many people!

Thank you, Terri. Now, on to Sara’s Sleep!!! Can’t wait!
The thing I like about poetry is that it is so subjective. It often has a different meaning for each reader than it does for the author. To me, I see this as someone watching people at a party or gathering.
Very true. When I write poetry, I get a concept in my head, which morphs into some words, then I watch my hands scatter across the keyboard. After I wrote “Glances”, I read it and was struck by the same idea you shared: this could mean so many different things to so many different people. I like that, because it lets a person take the words in whatever direction they want or need. Thanks for reading!!
