Misty,
almost morning, but not quite:
space between tree limbs
still holding in the night.
Did I hear a footfall?
or a morning dew’s drip
hitting the forest floor?
can’t see through the darkness
to safely open my cabin door.
A new day
not ready to be born:
don’t know what’s out there.
In the distance, a fog horn,
a warning: stay inside?
Too much hidden from view,
Wait ’til the light
chases away the gloom
and the shroud of night,
and whatever might be hidden there.
Then step outside, when daylight peeks through,
fine moisture barely tickles your skin,
light enough to melt the shadows away,
though hardly dawn, still dim.
It’s safe to venture out,
a new day’s begun.

Well, if I had that feeling I shouldn’t go out, I’d certainly wait. The night can be scary especially since the shadows conceal so much that is in plain view in the daytime.
A feeling we’ve all had, I’m sure — creepy!

Perhaps it’s best to listen to that sense that says “wait until the light – don’t venture out into the night” . . .
